Two years ago, a new general course was launched, focusing on regional environmental issues in the Red Sea. The course is delivered by EcoPeace and includes field trips as well as a project-based learning approach.
As part of the course, Maya Amitai and Avigail Haslevsky, students in the Psychology track, developed an educational-environmental project on light pollution. The project explains how excessive artificial lighting affects human health and the
coral reef in Eilat. The two students designed an engaging evening activity that includes a walk in the dark, stargazing, and games. They presented the activity to instructors at the Eilat Field School and trained them to continue delivering
it independently. In this way, the activity has become a permanent part of educational programs in the area rather than remaining a one-time event. As a continuation of the project, last July the two students traveled to Cyprus to participate in a four-day regional EcoPeace seminar. The seminar focused on regional climate challenges, with an emphasis on cooperation, leadership, and environmental conservation. For Maya and Avigail, meeting young people from across the region was an inspiring and educational experience. The two presented their project to the seminar participants, which was a unique and exciting opportunity for them to share their idea with a new audience. Their project is a small but meaningful contribution to raising awareness about light pollution.
