כיכר האופרה נפתחה מחדש לאחר שיפוץ שנמשך כשנה, והיום יש בה מזרקת סילון בטכנולוגיה חדשנית. מלון הרברט סמואל, כשמה של הטיילת, נפתח עם תחילת הקורונה לאחר שיפוץ שנמשך כשנתיים במגדל האופרה המיתולוגי.

וכפי שתראו בעצמכם, רחוב אלנבי נמצא עדיין בתקופת עבודות הרכבת הקלה של הקו הסגול. בסיום העבודות הוא מתעתד להיפתח כמדרחוב שוקק. מי שטייל בירושלים כבר יודע על מה אני מדברת.

מה אתם יודעים על האדריכל יהודה מגידוביץ'?

מהנדס העיר הראשון בתחילת שנות העשרים של המאה הקודמת נולד ב-1886 בעיר אומן באוקראינה ולמד אדריכלות באודסה. סוף מלחמת העולם הראשונה הביא בעקבותיו את המהפכה הבולשביקית והקמת ברית המועצות, ויהודה מגידוביץ' העדיף את ארץ ישראל המנדטורית. הוא עלה לארץ והתיישב בתל אביב.

המסלול שלנו בעקבות מגידוביץ' יתמקד בבניינים שתכנן ברחובות נחלת בנימין, רמב"ם, אלנבי ושדרות רוטשילד. הבניינים שנכיר מיועדים כולם לשימור. חלקם כבר שופצו, ביניהם מלון בן-נחום ברחוב אלנבי, מלון נורדאו בנחלת בנימין. המבנה שהפך לאחר קום המדינה לשגרירות הרוסית נבנה כווילה עבור משפחת לוין בשדרות רוטשילד. וכמובן, בית הכנסת הגדול ברחוב אלנבי נזקף גם הוא לזכותו.

Bialik Street: from the old town hall to the mythical cafe'

Bialik Street in Tel Aviv was named after the national poet during his lifetime, and that’s were his house was built.

The small street houses several important cultural buildings:

Beit Bialik – the home of the national poet Haim Nachman Bialik
Bialik Square in the north of the street:
- The old Town Hall – a museum of the city's history
- Felicia Blumenthal Center for Music
The Bauhaus Museum – a museum of the Bauhaus style
The Municipal Sanatorium – Beit Chava Shapira
Beit Reuven – now a museum displaying the works of the painter Reuven Rubin
Yiddishspiel Theater presenting plays in Yiddish since Shlomo Lahat's foundation

Some of the buildings were built in the 1920s in the style that was accepted in Tel Aviv at the time – the eclectic style, and from the 1930s the buildings were built in the international style, as required by the city engineer Yaakov Ben Sira (Schiffman).

We will talk about the buildings as they were originally planned, the conservation works and the new residents on the street.

I recommend ending the tour at a restaurant or bar in the Carmel market or in the Kerem Hateymanim neighborhood means “ Yemenite Vineyard”.

Dizengoff Square returned to street level and underwent a facelift. Now it is one of the hottest places in the city.

Cafes opened, new bars appeared, and hotels were renovated in buildings "to be preserved" and all this in 360 degrees around you.
Have you heard of Tel Aviv city planner Sir Patrick Geddes?
And what about the architect who plan the square, the young architect Genia Everbuch?

We will tour Dizengoff Square and learn to recognize the layers intertwined in the history of Tel Aviv, the first Hebrew city, from its earliest days during the British era (established at the end of the Turkish rule). We will talk about the history of the architecture of the square and the buildings around it, about an old cinema that became a boutique hotel, about the uniform balconies that surround it. And on a tour of the streets near the square we will recognize the first buildings and learn about the changes that have taken place over the years.

We will visit the inner courtyard of the housing complex of the workers who still lived in Tel Aviv at the time and some new buildings built in recent years. We will mention the important architects who designed the buildings then and now and we will be interested in the architectural vision of the city of Tel Aviv. I recommend to end the tour at a bar or restaurant around the square. The adventurers among you will connect the tour to the early evening hour and give a jump to the sea to watch the sunset.

from the Opera Square to Magen David Square

The Opera Square was reopened after a renovation that lasted about a year, and today it has a jet fountain with innovative technology.

The Herbert Samuel Hotel, as the name of the boardwalk, opened at the beginning of the corona after a renovation that lasted for about two years in the mythical Opera Tower.
And as you will see for yourself, Allenby Street is still in the period of the light rail works of the purple line. At the end of the works, it is planned to be opened as a bustling pedestrian street. Those who have traveled in Jerusalem already know what I am talking about.

What about the luxury buildings from the 1920s on Allenby Street? Do you know them?
Then we will tour the Opera Square and learn about a Kessem cinema that was built there and hosted the first Knesset until its seat moved to its current location in Jerusalem.

Wewill learn about Allenby Street, which was named as a tribute to General Allenby and was the " Champs Élysées" of the 1920s for the new immigrants who settled in Tel Aviv for its founding.

We will talk about the first buildings of Tel Aviv, most of which were built in an eclectic style that combines the European and Middle Eastern building traditions. Let's get to know the squares designed on Allenby Street: in the 1980s they became underground passages. We will be impressed by the legendary Bialik Cafe located at the intersection of Bialik and Allenby streets. We will mention the Allenby cinema which was destroyed and a new building was built in its place.

From the Russian Embassy to the Great Synagogue:

what do you know about the architect Yehuda Magidovich?

The first city engineer in the early twenties of the last century was born in 1886 in the town of Uman in the Ukraine and studied architecture in Odessa.

The end of the First World War brought in its wake the Bolshevik Revolution and the establishment of the Soviet Union, and Yehuda Magidovich preferred the British Mandate of Eretz Israel. He immigrated to pre-State Israel and settled in Tel Aviv .

Our route at Magidovich’s footsteps will focus on the buildings he designed on Nachalat Binyamin, Allenby, Lilienblum, Yehuda Halevi, Herzl and Rothschild Boulevards. The buildings we will get to know are all intended for preservation.

Some of them have already been renovated, among them the Ben-Nahum Hotel on Allenby Street, the Nordau Hotel in Nachalat Binyamin. The building that became the Russian Embassy after the Proclamation of Independence was initially used as a villa for the Levin family on Rothschild Boulevard. And of course, the Great Synagogue on Allenby Street is also credited to him.

I recommend ending the tour at a restaurant or bar on Herzl or Lilienblum Street.
