Kusum's current work focuses on identifying the role of sulfur metabolism enzymes in Arabidopsis to improve drought stress tolerance. Jay examines edible halophytes such as Salicornia and Sarcocornia, which are known for their innate ability to withstand challenging environmental conditions. Together, they aim to improve the climate resilience of crop plants, a mission of ever-growing importance in our rapidly changing world.
While their research is undoubtedly a significant part of their lives, Jay and Kusum also cherish the vibrant life here in Midreshet Ben-Gurion. The beautiful views of the Negev Desert serve as the backdrop to their beloved pastime of walking along the cliff. Away from the lab, Kusum embraces her Indian roots by cooking innovative Indian dishes and nurturing her garden, while Jay, an emerging photographer, takes advantage of the clear, dark skies of the Negev for his newfound hobby, astrophotography. Working in tandem on the same mission, Jay and Kusum offer a unique perspective in our scientific community, merging personal connection and professional collaboration. They remind us that love, shared goals, and a passion for improving the world can indeed coexist, making every challenge a shared venture. We are fortunate to have this inspiring couple as part of our institute and look forward to their continued contributions in the field of agricultural resilience.
