This workshop will present the scientific basis for MERIT as well as detailed descriptions of its practice allowing practitioners to begin to think about how to integrate this approach into their practice.
The workshop will begin with a detailed presentation of the concept of metacognition and its central importance for understanding how persons diagnosed with psychosis come to make sense of and respond to the challenges and possibilities they face and come to direct their own recovery.
Research which operationalizes metacognition and supports these claims will be summarized. The key elements and values of MERIT will next be described enabling participants to understand the key processes that are emphasized within MERIT. These will be illustrated with actual clinical examples. How MERIT may be begun to be implemented and studied with real world settings will finally be discussed.
